Youth arrested on abduction cry

A 21-year-old youth, identified as Subhojit Garai, was arrested from the Shyampukur area on Sunday after a 14-year-old girl of the same locality lodged a complaint that he had tried to abduct her in a taxi on Saturday evening. Police said Arpita Ghosh, of Mohun Bagan Lane, mentioned in her complaint that Subhojit intercepted her when she was returning from a dance class and forced her into a taxi. She was, however, allowed to get off on Jatindra Mohan Avenue. The accused was produced in court on Sunday and remanded in judicial custody.

Airport AC duct stolen

The duct of two air-conditioners in the immigration department’s training room at the international terminal building of Calcutta airport has been stolen, immigration officials said on Sunday. Officials said the theft of the pipe, around 120 feet in length, was discovered on Saturday night. A complaint has been lodged with the Airports Authority of India.

Undertrial flees

A 35-year-old undertrial, Dolly Haoladar, escaped from the female ward of MR Bangur Hospital on Saturday evening. Police said Haoladar, an inmate of Presidency jail, was arrested under the Foreigners Act for entering India from Bangladesh without valid documents early this month. She was admitted to hospital after being diagnosed with an infection in her lungs. She managed to flee on the pretext of collecting drinking water from a tap outside the ward.

Minibus mishap

Four persons were injured on Saturday night when a minibus skidded off the road and hit a lamp post at the crossing of SP Mukherjee Road and Hazra Road. According to police, the driver of the bus lost control over his vehicle after overtaking a private car and rammed into the post. All the four injured were rushed to Ramakrishna Mission Seva Pratishthan for treatment. The driver jumped off his cabin and fled but police impounded the vehicle.

Van overturns

A 40-year-old man was killed early on Sunday when a Matador van he was travelling in skidded and overturned on Bombay Road near Domjur. Police said Bhajan Pandit, the victim, was a supplier of ice who hailed from Bihar. The van driver and his help were injured and admitted to Howrah General Hospital.

Mob on rampage

Supporters of the Trinamul Congress, Congress and Janata Dal (United) went on the rampage on Sunday afternoon at a Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners (HRBC) office, set up at Mandirtala, in Howrah, to implement a proposed garment park. Police said the group of 200 men stormed the construction site of the park and set a generator ablaze. They ransacked the office, its computer and other equipment. The group then went to the road approaching Vidyasagar Setu and put up a roadblock for 30 minutes from 5pm. The HRBC authorities lodged a complaint mentioning the names of seven persons.
