Eve-teasing incident sparks protest

Ranchi, June 27: Residents of New Madhukam today laid siege on the Sukhdeonagar police station to protest against an eve-teasing incident in their area.

The protest started at 9am and continued till 10.30am. The officer in charge of the Sukhdeonagar police station, B. Prasad, said an FIR was lodged in this connection. The police assured serious action against the culprits.

A resident of the area said the situation arose when some youths passed lewd remarks at a girl and then attempted to kiss her in public.

“This happened on Thursday when the girl was going to a cobbler’s shop to repair her shoes. When local residents learnt about the incident, they took a strong exception to it,” one of the residents said.

“We have lodged an FIR against four youths of New Madhukam, including Amit alias Khargosh, Deepak Kumar alias Anda, Aditya Kumar and Ajay Kumar on the Kajal Kumari’s (name changed) statement,” he added.

Prasad said one of the accused had a criminal background while the other three were their associates.

“We are trying to arrest all of them. One among the accused, Khargosh, was earlier sent to the Birsa Munda Central Jail in some petty offence and was later was released on bail,” he added.

Few days ago, the city police had started Operation Majnu to teach eve-teasers a lesson.

The operation had been successful in the Lalpur police station area where several educational institutes, including Ranchi Women’s College and BIT Extension Centre are located.
