Toss decides gram panchayat fates

Alipurduar, June 26: The board of three gram panchayats in Alipurduar subdivision were today chosen after a toss.

One-rupee coins decided the fate of Dalgaon, Mendabari and Paronger Par gram panchayats, where pradhans and upa-pradhans were selected on the basis of a toss each. The winning slips have been issued.

In Dalgaon, of the eight seats, the Congress got four and the RSP the rest. With no other option left, a representative of the Falakta block office conducted a toss, the usual practice to select a pradhan if there is a tie. The post went to the RSP. The Congress, however, got the upa-pradhan’s seat. Of the 10 seats in Paronger Par, the CPM got five while the Trinamul Congress won the remaining seats.

The pradhan’s post went to the CPM after a toss. Trinamul had to remain satisfied with the post of the upa-pradhan.

In Kalchini block’s Mendabari, of the 10 seats, the Congress got five and the RSP the rest. Today after the toss, both the pradhan’s as well as the upa-pradhan’s chair went to the Congress.

The Congress formed the board in Jaigaon-II gram panchayat with one independent candidate. The Left Front had eight members, one less than the majority led by the Congress.

The Congress joined hands with the CPM in Shishu Jhumra in the Madarihat-Birpara block. The Congress and RSP both won seven seats each. The CPM won two seats and sided with the Congress to gain control of the gram panchayat.

In Paror Par located in Alipurduar-I block, the Congress got five seats, CPM three, RSP two and Independents three. Here, too, the Congress formed the board with help of the Independents.

Alipurduar subdivisional officer R. Alice Vez said a toss was the usual procedure for forming a board in case of a tie. “There was no problem at all during the formation of the boards today,” she added.
