Held for fake licence

Siliguri, June 26: A tout involved in a fake licence racket was arrested, while a government employee was detained on the same charge today.

Police said Ramshreya Singha Tomar, a BSF constable posted in Salugara, had got his two-wheeler licence through Arup Dasgupta about a month ago.

“Recently, Tomar was suspicious of the originality of the licence and lodged a complaint,” said Tapas Das, the additional superintendent of police, Jalpaiguri, today. “Our investigation led to the arrest of Dasgupta.”

Dasgupta used to charge Rs 300 for a two-wheeler driving licence. The police also raided Dasgupta’s house in Jalpaiguri’s Mohantapara and seized at least 30 fake licences.

The government employee, who has been detained, works at the district magistrate’s office. He was earlier posted at the motor vehicles’ department.

“We have information indicating his involvement in the racket. We have names of some other people including another government employee. Searches are on to catch them,” Das said.
