Held for loan

The Bakijai wing of the state co-operation department with the help of police on Thursday arrested Mantu Deka, an employee of the directorate of employment and craftsmen training, for his failure to repay a loan of Rs 60,000 which he had taken from the Co-operative City Bank Limited.

Car thieves

Police arrested two car thieves from Udalbakra on Thursday. The accused have been identified as Ramen Saikia alias Raju, 25, and Pradip Das alias Uma, 25. Saikia is a resident of Beharbari while Das is from Basistha.

Accident

A Trekker driver, Ratan Kalita, died on the spot when he lost control of his vehicle which hit a road divider and then overturned on MG road on Thursday. Six passengers were injured in the accident.

Arrested

Police on Thursday arrested Rinku Chetri from Bamunimaidan on charges of his involvement in murder of a youth, Swapan Deb, on Saturday.

Competition

The second three-day North East Poetry Festival 2008 begins at Shilpgram at Panjabari on Thursday. Author Mamoni Raisom Goswami was also present at the festival. A poetry competition on communal harmony and national integration was held.

Meeting

The Greater Guwahati Citizens’ Co-ordination Committee will organise a general meeting at Puja Mandap Bhawan at Silpukhuri on Saturday to discuss artificial floods.

Price rally

The Assam state unit of the BJP will organise a rally on Friday against the price rise of essential commodities, corruption and deterioration of law and order in the state. The rally will start from Mahabir Uddayan at Fancy Bazar and proceed towards Raj Bhavan via Panbazar and Latasil.

Union meet

The first meeting of new office bearers’ of All Guwahati Students’ Union was held at Pra-ghyotish College on Thursday.

Gratitude

The Kamakhya Debutter Board on Thursday offered thanks to various organisations, the metro district administration and city police for their help to organise the Ambubachi Mela.

Request

The Kamrup (metro) administration has requested the exercise department to launch a drive along the railway tracks against the manufacture and sale of illicit liquor.

New tankers

The GMC will introduce water tankers from July to supply water in different areas.
