Cab drives away with three lakh

A taxi driver allegedly sped away on Tuesday with a passenger’s handbag in which Rs 3 lakh was kept. In her complaint, Seema Mukherjee, the passenger, said she hired the taxi at Howrah station on her way back from Delhi. After reaching her home on Ujir Chowdhury Road in Ultadanga, she got off the taxi and took out her luggage from the boot. The driver allegedly drove away when she opened one of the back doors to take her handbag. Mukherjee could not note the registration number of the taxi.

Passport tamper

A passenger was arrested at the airport’s international terminal on Tuesday for tampering with his passport. Malcolm W. Macleod, 47, was about to board a flight from Calcutta to Bangkok when he was stopped by immigration officials. Two pages in his passport were torn. During interrogation, Macleod said he had applied for Canadian visa which was refused by the country’s embassy and a note was written on these pages. He feared that the denial of Canadian visa would jeopardise his plans of settling in the US and so he had torn the pages. He was handed over to airport police.

Hospital suicide

Tapan Das, 55, hanged himself with a towel in a bathroom of Howrah District Hospital on Tuesday. Das, a resident of Nimtala area in Sankrail, was admitted to the male surgical ward a few days back for an operation on a carbuncle in his leg. He was depressed over his illness, said his family members.

Arms dealer

Mohammad Munna, a dealer in improvised firearms, was arrested in Park Street on Tuesday evening. Arms, ammunition and Rs 35,000 in cash were found on him.

Cop injured

Amit Maity, a sergeant attached to South Traffic Guard, was injured after the motorcycle he was riding was hit by a truck on the Kidderpore ramp of Vidyasagar Setu on Monday night. He was admitted to CMRI Hospital.

Bus mishap

Twelve passengers of a Howrah-Jhikira bus were injured when it overturned near Ankurhati checkpost in Domjur on Tuesday morning after hitting a van-rickshaw.

Flight returns

A Deccan flight to Jamshedpur returned to Calcutta on Tuesday afternoon after failing to land at the destination because of bad weather.

Body found

The body of an unidentified middle-aged man was found near gate No. 3 of Calcutta airport on Tuesday.

Road block

Traffic movement in central Calcutta was disrupted for 45 minutes on Tuesday afternoon when supporters of the student wing of the CPI blocked the intersection of College Street and BB Ganguly Street.
