One more child dies of fever
Islampur, June 20: Six-year-old Md Gulam of Andaria village died of fever at Karandighi Brahmin Hospital today.
Md Imamuddin of Karandighi block said his son was well last night. But the boy was taken to hospital after he complained of fever in the morning. Gulam is the 16th child to die from an yet-to-be diagnosed disease in the block.
Idol seized
Siliguri: SSB personnel have detained two men —Bimal Sharma and Niranjan Debnath — from Panitanki on the India-Nepal border and recovered an idol of Lord Vishnu from them. A senior SSB officer said the idol has been handed over to Siliguri customs officials who will consult experts at North Bengal University to assess its age and price.
Transfer call
Siliguri: The Siliguri Bar Association has demanded the transfer of subdivisional officer Smita Pandey for allegedly misbehaving with a lawyer, Md Yusuf Ali, during proceedings in a court for settling disputes between landowners and tenants on Thursday. The association has sought an apology and threatened to boycott her court.
Gherao
Islampur: Islampur Nagarik Unnayan Suraksha Committee on Friday gheraoed the superintendent of Islampur District Hospital, P. Barui, protesting against “abysmal condition” of the hospital and lack of facilities there. The protesters alleged that the superintendent was never available in the hospital.
