Two die as truck falls

Gangtok, June 18: Two persons died and two others injured last night when a truck they were travelling on went off NH31 between Singtam and Ranipul, and plunged into a ditch 100feet below.

While Prem Rai (56) died on the spot, the driver Bal Bahadur Rai succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to hospital. The injured are being treated at a hospital in Gangtok.


Fever recce

Islampur: A seven-member team from Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine on Wednesday visited the Domohona and Rasakhowa village panchayats under Karandighi block. The group collected blood samples of the villagers. Thirteen children have died in the area over the past five days because of an undiagnosed fever.


Teesta alert

Jalpaiguri: The North Bengal Flood Control Commission on Wednesday issued yellow alert (one notch below the highest red alert) in the unprotected areas on the left bank of the Teesta near Jalpaiguri following incessant rain in the hills.


Pond clash

Balurghat: Mainur Bibi (37) was arrested for allegedly attacking her neighbour Oklesh Rahman Mondal and his wife at Borkoil in Balurghat on Wednesday. Mondal lodged an FIR alleging that the arrested woman and eight others had attacked him and wife over the possession of a pond. Ealier, the accused persons had allegedly stolen fish from Mondal’s pond.


Blockades

Raiganj: Traffic on NH34 at Panisala, 9km from here, was blocked twice on Wednesday. The first disruption happened after a private bus had been attacked by some students. To protest against the attack, many buses were kept diagonally across the road, blocking the traffic. The blockade was lifted after police intervened. One hour later, the students also blocked the road, demanding that express buses stop there.
