Water for hospitals

State PWD minister Kshiti Goswami on Wednesday visited SSKM Hospital and Medical College and Hospital, where he held meetings with the authorities to resolve the water crisis. Goswami said the construction of a new water reservoir at SSKM would be completed by the end of this month, which would end the scarcity there. At Medical College, the ferrule size needed to be increased for more supply of drinking water.

Flier detained

A man was detained by the customs authorities at Calcutta airport on Wednesday morning for allegedly smuggling in electronic goods and micro chips from Hong Kong. L.S. Chawla was intercepted at the airport’s domestic terminal soon after he got off Air India’s flight from Delhi around 8.30am. Officials said Chawla, a resident of Delhi, regularly flies to Hong Kong and illegally brings in electronic goods. He then takes a domestic flight to Calcutta, where he sells these items.

VIP mishap

Sunil Khemka , a 32-year-old trader, died on Wednesday after being hit by a unknown vehicle on VIP Road near Golaghata late on Tuesday. Police said the accident took place around 11.45pm when Sunil was crossing the road.

Cannes

O&M Calcutta is the first agency from the city to win a metal at Cannes. A media innovation campaign for the Calcutta School of Music got it a bronze Lion in the category of Best Use of Ambient Media: Large Scale. The award was announced on Tuesday at the 55th International Advertising Festival, Cannes Lions 2008.

Tapan Sinha

Film director and producer Tapan Sinha, admitted to CMRI Hospital on June 12, will be discharged on Thursday, hospital officials said. Sinha was in hospital with acute respiratory distress and chest pain and subsequently developed pneumonia.

Intruder dies

Mohammad Firdaus, a 40-year-old Bangladeshi who sneaked in through the Bongaon border about a fortnight ago, died at Dum Dum Central jail on Wednesday evening. Police said he may have died of cardiac failure.

Run over

Satyendra Kohli, 70, a resident of Thakurpukur, was run over by the rear wheels of a bus on route 80A after he fell while trying to get off on Belvedere Road on Tuesday afternoon. The driver was arrested and the bus impounded.

Constable hit

Constable Srimanta Kayal of the South traffic guard was injured in the leg after being hit by a private bus at the Diamond Harbour Road-Sahapur Road crossing in New Alipore on Wednesday morning. The driver was arrested.
