Snag brings back Ranchi flight

A JetLite flight from Calcutta to Ranchi returned minutes after take-off on Tuesday morning because of a snag. The aircraft, carrying 30 passengers, took off at 6.30am, after which the pilot detected the snag.

Though the flight could have carried on to Ranchi, there were no engineers at the destination to carry out repairs and the aircraft would have to be grounded. So it was decided to bring it back to Calcutta. The passengers were accommodated on another flight that left two hours later.

Kathmandu flier detained

Laola Fyalo, 33, was detained at Calcutta airport on Tuesday evening after he arrived from Kathmandu on an Air India flight. Immigration officials said there was a look-out circular issued by Guwahati police against him. Fyalo claimed he was a Buddhist monk from Arunachal Pradesh and went to Nepal by road.

Mother suicide

Binapani Pal, 63, a resident of DKD Railway Quarters in Ultadanga, hanged herself with a sari early on Tuesday. The body was found by her son Moloy around 5.30am and rushed to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead. Preliminary investigations revealed Binapani had been depressed since the death of her elder son a few days ago.

Newborn’s body

The body of a newborn girl was found floating in Subhas Sarobar around 2.15pm on Tuesday. The body was fished out of the water by police and sent to NRS Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem. The identity of the baby could not be established.

Dies of injuries

Malay Jana, 22, died at Behala’s Vidyasagar Hospital on Tuesday morning. Police said Malay, a resident of Sarsuna, was admitted to the hospital on June 14 for injuries he suffered in the head after a scuffle with a friend.

Sergeant dashed

Sudip Kumar Maity, a sergeant of Shyambazar traffic guard, was injured after being dashed by a car on Tuesday afternoon. The driver had violated traffic norms and on seeing the sergeant, he accelerated and dashed him. Maity chased the car and intercepted it at Sinthee crossing. The driver was arrested and the vehicle impounded.

Rescheduled

The Sealdah-Amritsar Akal Takht Express, scheduled to leave Sealdah at 7.40am on Wednesday, has been rescheduled to leave Sealdah at 7.40am on Thursday because of non-availability of a Sealdah-bound rake, in the wake of the Gujjar agitation, an Eastern Railway spokesperson said on Tuesday.

Dowry death

A 23-year old homemaker, Sumitra Mondal, hanged herself with a dupatta on Monday night at Baruipur, on the southern fringes. Police said Sumitra was tortured by her husband and in-laws for dowry. Her mother-in-law was arrested, but her husband and father-in-law are absconding.

Error

The late nuclear scientist Raja Ramanna’s name was wrongly spelt in the caption titled Nuclear Renaissance in Tuesday’s edition. Sorry.
