Cong cry for special probe

Malda, June 16: The Congress leadership in Malda today urged the district administration to hand over the Biswanath Guha murder case to a specialised agency like the CID or to the CBI as police are yet to make any headway five days after the killing of the municipality vice-chairman.

In a memorandum to district magistrate Chittaranjan Das and police chief Satyajit Bandyopadhyay, the leaders expressed unhappiness over the lack of progress in the police investigation. Guha was found murdered with his head smashed with a brick in an under-construction lodge near his house on June 12. He was also shot in the head and stabbed.

Asit Bose, an AICC member who was part of the delegation that met the authorities, said: “The police have been claiming that Guha’s driver Akhtar Sheikh had killed him. Akhtar might have done it, but he was certainly not alone. Someone must have masterminded the crime. The police are still in the dark about that. We have suggested that the case be handed over to the CBI or CID.”

Besides Bose, Englishbazar MLA Krishnendu Chowdhury and chairman of the municipality Narendranath Tiwari were part of the Congress delegation. They were also unhappy about the progress of the probe on a case of attempted murder to district Trinamul Congress chief Babla Sarkar, a day before Guha’s death. Sarkar had been shot at by three men near his house at Mahanandapalli on the night of June 11.

The district police chief said the investigation was going on the “right direction”. “Two officers of the rank of the deputy superintendent of police are investigating and I am monitoring the case. It will take some time to crack the mystery,” Bandyopadhyay said.
