Guha suspect list grows

Malda, June 15: Police believe that more than one person was involved in the murder of the vice-chairman of the Englishbazar Municipality, even though the victim’s driver Akhtar Sheikh has allegedly confessed to the crime.

The law enforcers have, however, arrested a second suspect, but are yet to find out the others. Biswanath Guha was found murdered in an under-construction lodge, 500m from his house in the Fulbari area of the town, on Thursday night.

“We are reconstructing the case step by step, since it appears that the crime could not have been committed by a single person. We are taking the help of forensic experts to find out if any drugs had been mixed with the drinks served to Guha,” district superintendent of police Satyajit Bandyopadhyay said.

The police had yesterday arrested Uday Roy, who had called the Intuc leader out of his house around 11pm on the night of the murder. Roy was produced before the court today and remanded in police custody.

Investigating officials had taken Roy to the place of crime this afternoon. He was among the six persons detained after the murder.

Lakshmi, Guha’s widow, was again interrogated today. The woman, who according to police was keen on protecting Akhtar Sheikh on Friday, told reporters today that “both Uday (Roy) and the driver had murdered” her husband. Things will be clear if the police interrogate them thoroughly, she said.

“Some people are spreading canards against me. It is being said I was behind the murder of my husband. How is it possible? It is a kind of character assassination,” Lakshmi said.

The district police chief claimed that his team was examining all angles and the investigation might take some time since several questions remained unanswered.
