Medical insurance

New Delhi, June 15 (PTI): An insurance company cannot deny medical claims on the ground of concealment of a pre-existing disease unless the insured person undergoes surgery or remains in hospital just before purchasing a policy, a Delhi consumer commission has held.

The commission’s observation came while dismissing an appeal by Oriental Insurance Company against a district forum order, directing it to pay Rs 1.07 lakh to Mohinder Singh as compensation, including the insured amount of Rs 1 lakh. Singh, who purchased the policy on July 10, 2000, was later hospitalised following chest pain. The diagnosis cost him Rs 1.34 lakh.

PM surgery

New Delhi (PTI): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had a cataract removed from his left eye at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences on Sunday. Singh, 75, had an intra-ocular lens implanted.

False couples

Akola (PTI): Nine social organisations and 60 couples were found organising and taking part in bogus mass marriage ceremonies to wangle government funds disbursed under the Kanyadaan Yojana, sources said. Akola district authorities in Maharashtra had received several complaints which prompted them to investigate.

Police suicide

Mumbai (PTI): A 42-year-old police officer committed suicide in Dadar this afternoon. Sub-inspector Pradip Mane shot himself with his service revolver at his post outside the Shiv Sena headquarters around 12.40pm, police said.

Varsity gift

New York (PTI):An Indian businessman has donated $11 million to his alma mater here. The University of Buffalo had offered him a fellowship 35 years ago when he had no money to pursue doctoral studies. Kapoor is a skilled entrepreneur in the pharmaceutical industry.

Border arrest

Amritsar (PTI): Two Pakistanis, who crossed into Ajnala village in Punjab, have been arrested by the Border Security Force. Sources said the intruders — Muneer Ahmed and Mohammad Asif — entered India on Saturday.
