| Colours and lines |
|
Fascinated by colours since childhood, Debnath Biswas expresses his inner self through bright, colourful canvases that exude vigorous energy. The ongoing solo show of his paintings and drawings reflects an artistic bent of mind, strongly influenced by religious, ritualistic and social customs and conventions. Ironically, the colours on his canvases are also an expression of the chaos and contradiction of life. While the artist confesses that he enjoys communicating through lines and strokes upon a surface and transforming them into images that tell a story, at the same time he is aware of the abstraction of senses generated by them. His creativity appears to be the product of a natural force, a momentary outburst of energy directed to the surface he works upon. His creations are like music compositions, echoing and floating in the labyrinth of the viewer’s perception and imagination, much like a haunting melody that refuses to fade away from mind or memory. Though representational in nature, in the mode of traditional Eastern painting, they are decidedly modern in design by virtue of their ability to draw an emotional effect from their intrinsic visual harmony.
