Labourer dies under soil heap

A 22-year-old contract labourer of South Dum Dum Municipality was crushed to death under a heap of loose soil on Sunday afternoon. Salim Sheikh was checking a pipeline installed in a dug-up, four-ft stretch at Kajipara, when the soil heaped on the side of the ditch collapsed on him. He was alone at the site. Police extricated the body. Municipality chairman Srihir Bhattacharya said the victim’s family would be offered compensation.

Port Blair flight back

A JetLite flight with 180 passengers returned to Calcutta on Sunday after failing to land at Port Blair because of bad weather. The flight took off at 11am and returned at 2pm. Airport officials said all the passengers had been put up in hotels.

Denied entry

A footballer from Kenya was denied entry to Calcutta on Sunday evening for not carrying proper documents. Julius Owino Moya arrived in Calcutta from Dubai on an Emirates flight but was stopped at the immigration counter. Officials said he had played for a leading football club of the city last season. He was sent back to Dubai on the return flight, officials said.

Deaths on tracks

Homemaker Rupa Nag, 30, killed herself and her seven-year-old daughter Natasha by throwing themselves in front of a train near Barasat on Sunday afternoon. Rupa’s elder daughter, Nisha, who studies in Class V, was also with them. She managed to escape after biting her mother’s arm to free herself when she saw the train approaching.

Guards thrashed

A gang of eight beat up two security guards of a closed factory and stole a gun from one of them early on Sunday. The factory is located at Mirchak, in Mahestala. Around 1am, the men entered the factory to steal iron scrap. The scuffle broke out when they were confronted by the guards.

Balcony falls

A 60-year-old woman was seriously injured on Sunday afternoon when part of a third-floor balcony of a CMC quarters collapsed. Baruna Roy, the injured, was collecting drinking water from a roadside tap when the concrete chunk fell on her. She was admitted to SSKM Hospital with injuries in her waist.

Torture arrest

Police on Sunday arrested Rajesh Shaw, a telephone booth-owner in the Burrabazar area, on the charge of torturing his wife Neha. According to police, Rajesh, a resident of NS Road, married Neha last February and had since then been allegedly torturing her. Neha lodged a complaint with Burrabazar police.
