Cooch Behar, June 13: A series of bandhs in the past one week has affected normal life in Cooch Behar district.
Close on the heels of the two state-wide bandhs called by the CPM and the Trinamul Congress on the fuel price rise last week, the SFI called a 24-hour students’ strike in the district today which passed off peacefully.
Today’s strike was called to protest against the murder of Debabrata Pramanik, a second-year student of Toofanganj College, whom the SFI claimed to be its leader. Exams were, however, exempted from the purview of the agitation.
Pramanik fell to bullets when a Trinamul Congress procession was attacked at Baroitala in Toofanganj on Wednesday night. Trinamul had also called a bandh in the Toofanganj subdivision yesterday to protest against Debabrata’s murder.
Another bandh called today by the Trinamul Congress in Cooch Behar II block paralysed normal life. Shops, education institutions and offices were closed and the roads wore a deserted look. However, no untoward incident has been reported.
The bandh was called to protest against the killing of Safiur Rahman, a Trinamul supporter, who was injured in a clash with CPM members at Pundibari on Sunday.
Students and traders were the most affected lots. “We face problems in reaching the exam centres,” said Aparna Sarkar, a student. A local businessman said bandhs — whether they are called by the CPM or Trinamul — should be banned.
