Gems of Indian classical music
Films Division, Government of India and Nandan, West Bengal Film Centre host the second season of Classical Singers on Celluloid, featuring documentaries on eminent contemporary music legends. These films unfold stories of some of the pioneers of the highest distinction of Indian classical music. Gangubai Hangal (dir: Vijaya Mulay; 6 pm) introduces the foremost woman vocalist of the Kirana gharana of Hindust ani classical music. Including an interview with Hangal, it shows the difficulties the singer had to face in learning music in a conservative society. The film portrait of Girija Devi (dir: Bijoy Chatterjee; 6.30 pm) has been etched through a series of interviews and recitals. The last living Queen of Thumri is seen practising and performing her special forte Poorab Ang Thumri. Through her documentary Pandit Jasraj (dir: Madhura Jasraj; 7.30 pm), its director and wife of the music maestro has presented an elaborate, intimate picture of her husband’s biography, his philosophy of music and life.

WORKSHOP
