Siliguri, June 11: North Bengal University today made it clear that it would not give another chance to those who could not attend examinations because of the indefinite bandh called by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha.
“Five students in the plains, who feared that they could not reach the examination centre in the hills for today’s paper, approached us yesterday,” said Debashis Dutta, acting controller of examinations.
“We allowed them to write exams at the Siliguri College centre. Now that the strike has been relaxed, we hope that all candidates stranded here would be able to reach their respective centres to attend the remaining exams,” he added.
“The university sent us a list of five students this morning, asking us to let them write Sociology Paper-II at our institute,” said Malay Karanjai, the principal of Siliguri College.
Gorkha Janmukti Vidyarthi Morcha today wrote to the vice-chancellor, Arunava Basumajumdar, seeking the postponement of exams in all hill colleges and another chance to those who failed to reach the exam centres.
“If the university could put off exams when the CPM and the Trinamul Congress called strikes, why can’t it do the same now,” asked Kismet Chhetri, president of the Vidyarthi Morcha.
Referring to the concession given to the five students in the plains, Chhetri wanted to know why the university was not showing same concern for the students in the hills.
Dutta said the sudden strike called by the Morcha was indefinite and it was not possible for the varsity to consider the plea. “We have constraints in doing so.”
“Nobody from the hills contacted us saying they were facing problems to reach exam centres,” said Dutta. “If any student gets in touch with us, we will try to make some arrangements.”
“We can help students attend exams, but the question of holding re-examination for anybody who has missed a paper doesn’t arise at all,” the official said.
A part of the university exams had to be rescheduled because of the panchayat elections. Then, the bandhs called by the CPM and Trinamul also affected the schedule.
