Malda, June 11: The pregnant wife of a deceased Congress leader today accused her in-laws of attempting to murder her for her husband’s property.

Chumki Das, into her sixth month of pregnancy, alleged that her brothers-in-law Prakash and Prabir Das had beaten up her on Monday. Her husband Pranay , a close aide of MLA Krishnendu Chowdhury, died of heart attack on April 5. “My in-laws started torturing me after my husband’s death. They are eyeing his property. Police refused to accept my complaint earlier but registered it after a court order,” Chumki, admitted to the district hospital here, said.

Prakash has refuted the charge. “She is trying to blackmail us,” he said. Police chief Satyajit Banerjee said a probe is on.
