Judoka dies in accident

Hissar: Indian judoka Mukesh, a SAFF Games gold medallist, died in a road accident here. The 23-year-old, also a Punjab police employee, was posted in Madhuban Karnal and is survived by mother and brother.

Anju finishes 7th

New Delhi: Ace Indian long jumper Anju Bobby George came a poor seventh among eight competitors in the Prefontain Classic at Eugene, Oregan in US. The lanky Indian cleared a wind-aided (+1.4) 6.47m to finish just ahead of American Tianna Madison (6.04).

Sunitha up

Birmingham: Sunitha Rao defeated a higher ranked opponent in Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic in straight sets to advance to the second round of the $200,000 WTA DFS Classic on Monday. The US based-Indian won 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.

Eesha leads

Kozhikode: Fourth seed Eesha Karavade of Maharashtra emerged sole leader with five points in the fifth round of the 35th National Women’s B Chess championship on Monday. Eesha beat Bhakti Kulkarni (Goa).

Indians 2nd

London: An Indian team led by PS Kohli finished runners up in the annual Yorkshire nations cup-international polo tournament at Beverley polo club here. Argentina beat the Indian team on Sunday by eight goals to six and a half, to retain the trophy.

No fireworks

Beijing: Beijing is banning fireworks during a more than three-month period around the Olympic Games. The order extends an existing ban in the city center to the capital’s sprawling suburbs.
