Wild jumbo kills girl in tea estate

Alipurduar, June 9: A wild elephant killed a 10-year-old girl at Rangamati Tea Estate, while a herd of pachyderms damaged seven huts at Madhya Khayerbari today.

The elephant entered the estate around 5am and injured Budhini Oraon of Rangkote Line. She succumbed to injuries at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital later.

In Madhya Khayerbari, the herd of 40 elephants destroyed the huts. The affected villagers gheraoed the Madarihat range office for three hours. Ashim Chaki, the range officer, said: “We will try our best to compensate the families.”
