Bomb explodes and kills maker

Malda, June 8: One person was killed and another injured when the bombs they were making went off at a house in Khejurbana in Manikchak late last night.

Hosen Sheikh, 45, a resident of the area, died on the spot. Ziaur Rahman, in whose house the bombs were being made, was injured. The explosion blew off the roof of Rahaman’s house.

According to police, Rahman has been admitted to the Malda district hospital in a critical condition. He has been arrested and a policeman has been posted beside his bed. Other members of the gang involved in the incident fled.

The Congress MLA of Englishbazar, Krishnendu Chowdhury, alleged that CPM members, routed both in the zilla parishad and at the panchayat samity polls at Manikchak, were making the bombs to “terrorise local people”. The Left party was putting pressure on the police to accuse the Congress of making bombs, the MLA said.

“The CPM has been campaigning in the area that Congress supporters are making bombs to attack their party members. We fear the police will toe the CPM line,” Chowdhury said.

Ashima Chowdhury, the CPM MLA from Manikchak, has denied the charge. “Criminals of the area had been engaged by the Congress to create an atmosphere of panic before the formation of civic boards,” she said.

The Malda district police chief, Satyajit Bandyopadhyay, said an investigation has been initiated.
