Truckers’ strike

New Delhi, June 7: The All India Motor Transport Congress, the apex body of truckers, has threatened to go on a nationwide strike from July 2 if its demands for a fixed duty on diesel and exempting them from service tax are not met. “We have a series of demands and will be submitting a memorandum to the government on Monday. If these demands are not met by June 30, we will go ahead with a nationwide strike from July 2,” aimtc president Charan Singh Lohara said.

Forex kitty

Mumbai, June 7: After rising for three consecutive weeks, the country’s forex reserves fell by $1.55 billion to $314.61 billion for the week ended May 30. This was primarily because of a fall in foreign currency assets which declined by $1.32 billion to $304.87 billion from $306.20 billion during the week.

Berger net

Calcutta, June 7: Berger Paints India Ltd has registered a 15 per cent rise in sales at Rs 1,522 crore for the year ended March 31, 2008, compared with Rs 1,322 crore in the previous year. Profit before tax was Rs 119 crore against Rs 102 crore in 2006-07. Profit after tax rose to Rs 92 crore from Rs 83 crore in the previous year.

NHPC tie-up

Srinagar, June 7: Power producer NHPC is likely to sign an agreement with Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Corporation for generating 2,100MW of power from the Chenab basin in the state at an estimated cost of Rs 15,000 crore.

SBI scheme

Bhubaneswar, June 7: SBI Life Insurance plans to launch a more “lucrative” product under the health category by July end. “We are planning a health product called critical illness,” company managing director and CEO Uday Sankar Roy said.
