Haldia unit opens

Haldia, June 5: Work resumed tonight at the aluminium coil unit that the Citu shut down yesterday demanding a hike in wages for 110 casual employees.

Yesterday, the CPM-backed union drove out the 240 permanent employees at Manaksia Ltd and closed the factory.

The Citu leadership has, however, threatened to go on indefinite strike from June 19 at Manaksia if its demand is not met.

Lightning

Calcutta: Lighting killed eight persons in five districts — South 24-Parganas, Burdwan, Birbhum, Nadia and East Midnapore — on Friday. Two of the dead were women.

Excavation

Suri (Birbhum): A concrete structure believed to be a century old was found on Friday when a farmer was digging his plot near Bolpur, around 200km from Calcutta. Utpal Biswas, the sub-divisional officer of Bolpur, has asked the Archaeological Survey of India to send a team to examine the structure.

Fatal affair

Bolpur: A 35-year-old man in a Bolpur village was hacked to death when he went for a hair cut. Police said Fazle Rahman was murdered by Maniruddin Sheikh and his son Kalu from the nearby Nayanpur village in Murshidabad. Fazle allegedly had an affair with Maniruddin’s wife.
