‘Assault’ students in council plea

Raiganj, May 28: The managing committee of Bindol High School today sent the names of 45 students of Class XI, some of whom had assaulted headmaster Bishnu Dayal Agarwala after being denied promotion, to the Higher Secondary council for reconsideration.

Secretary of the school Narayan Chandra Roy said the committee had met on Tuesday and decided to write to the chairperson of the West Bengal Council for Higher Secondary Education urging him to allow the students to get promotion “on sympathetic ground”.

“Many of them could not qualify just for one or two marks. The headmaster did this deliberately to take revenge on students who were aware of his corrupt practices. We will also write to the district inspector (DI) of schools (secondary) with a list of illegal work Agarwal had done,” Roy said.

According to school sources, 114 students of Class XI had appeared in the annual exams. The results were published on May 5, the day the school gave over for summer. When the school reopened on May 26, the students had asked the headmaster to “consider” their cases. When Agarwala expressed helplessness, some of the students along with three managing committee members punched and kicked him.

The headmaster, who has been admitted to the district hospital with injuries on the chest, hand and knees, lodged an FIR naming the three members of the committee.

No one named in the FIR has been arrested so far. Deputy superintendent of police Sisir Das said a hunt has been launched to catch them.

Today, Agarwala described the managing committee meeting as illegal. “Only the headmaster is authorised to convene a meeting to discuss academic issues,” he said adding that he would also complain to the council and the DI.

Bipul Moitra, the district secretary of the CPM-affiliated All Bengal Teachers’ Association, said: “We know the headmaster is corrupt but we don’t support the assault.”
