Fitness Funda - Shoulders and the man

On the fitness scale, I would rate myself: Between six and seven. I definitely have a long way to go.

The fittest I have looked on screen: My best is still yet to come because I haven’t really looked that great yet.

The Bollywood body I envy the most: Honestly, I envy none. One man I do admire a lot is Mr Bachchan. The kind of energy that man has even at this age is just amazing. He is probably the fittest man in the industry.

The Bollywood heroine with the fittest body: Today, the business is so competitive that everybody looks great. There used to be times when we would have overweight heroines but today I don’t think we have even one heroine who doesn’t look fit.

Any special training I took for my upcoming film Hijack: I had to work a lot on my arms. I had to hang under a chopper for about seven days. You need really strong arms and shoulders to be able to do that. So I specifically trained a lot for my shoulders, arms and upper and lower back. It takes a toll on your lower back as well.

Fitness for me: Includes what time you wake up, what you eat and what time you eat. It means understanding your body — there are different body types, some are flexible but not strong and vice versa. So it’s important to understand your body and work on your weaker points.

My fitness regimen: My fitness regimen is very flexible. I weight train and sometimes when I feel very stiff after training I do Ashtanga Yoga. My yoga teacher is Eefa (Shroff). I workout everyday and I alternate between weights and other form of exercises.

My diet: My yoga teacher and a nutritionist at my gym, Sykz, have designed a special diet programme for me, which I try to follow as much as I can. I try to stay away from fried food and sweets. I am a fishetarian.

The body part I love training: My legs. Whenever I train my legs, I feel strong overall.

The body part I hate training: My arms — I find it boring, just sitting in one place.

My best body feature: I think I have strong shoulders.

My worst body feature: Probably my arms.

The best fitness compliment I have got: I do a really long headstand. For a headstand you need to have really strong shoulders and arms. My yoga teacher says, ‘If I don’t ask you to become upright again, you can probably read a script upside down.’ But she tells me to come down after five minutes. The longest headstand that I have done is about 10 or 15 minutes.

I started working out at the age of: 19 or 20 I guess; but I was into sports before that.

My first workout: Was in the school gym. It was one of those casual workouts when you go to the school gym and pick up weights just to see what it is like.

The gym I workout in: Sykz. They have assigned a trainer for me whose name is Manav. He is very good.

When I workout, I feel: Energetic. I enjoy the rush of energy the most.

If I don’t workout, I feel: Groggy and lazy.

My workout partner: I don’t have any partner for my workouts but for the yoga sessions there are usually four people.

My opinion on the latest (six pack) trend: It’s great to be so fit that you have really low fat in your body. When people talk about a six-pack body, they mean really low fat levels. On the other hand, that’s not the only test of fitness. Having a six pack necessarily doesn’t mean that you can run for 20 kilometres or lift a good amount of weight.
