Airport probe into cabbie assault

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport police station officers have started an investigation into Saturday morning’s incident of a taxi driver allegedly being beaten up by some Citu workers at the airport. Suresh Chandra Yadav, 23, the taxi driver, had complained that he was returning from the airport after dropping off a passenger. On the way he picked up another passenger from the airport’s domestic terminal. A few Citu workers of the airport taxi stand dragged him out and beat him with iron rods. They also damaged his taxi and even forced the passengers to get off the vehicle. The incident took place around 11am on Saturday.

Van crushes cyclist

Akbar Ali Molla, 32, riding a bicycle, was crushed under the wheels of a Matador van on the Basanti highway, in the southern suburbs, on Sunday. Police said the speeding Matador hit Molla from behind. He was rushed to National Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. The Matador driver fled, leaving the vehicle behind.

Labourer falls

A contract labourer fell from the first floor of a building under construction after being hit by a chunk of cement that fell from the roof. Akbar Ali Mondal, 20, had just started his night shift around 10pm on Saturday when the chunk of cement fell on him. Unable to balance himself, he tripped and fell off the makeshift bamboo ladder. He was admitted to Bidhannagar Subdivisional Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment for a spinal injury.

Father, son hurt

A father and son were seriously injured late on Saturday when an autorickshaw dashed the two-wheeler they were riding on Beleghata Main Road. According to police, the auto driver lost control of his vehicle after overtaking another two-wheeler and hit the motorcycle. The injured were identified as Raj Kumar Mehta and son Chetan. They were admitted to NRS Hospital. The auto driver fled in his vehicle.

Gangster in net

New Market police arrested gangster Dawood in connection with a gun attack on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road last month. Police said Dawood, along with associate Bachcha Aftab, had shot Kana Iqbal, of a rival gang, and fled on a scooter. Aftab was arrested from Jehanabad a week later but Dawood had been absconding. After a night-long raid on Saturday, he was netted from Beniapukur.
