Alipurduar, May 23: A Congress member, who was attacked allegedly by CPM supporters on Wednesday, succumbed to his injuries at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri last night.
The CPM workers hit Kanai Oraon (48) with an iron rod when he had tried to stop them from attacking the Congress supporters returning home after the counting of votes for the panchayat elections at Khayerbari in Nagrakata block.
Fourteen Congress supporters were thrashed near the CPM office at Khayerbari in the evening of May 21. Biswaranajan Sarkar, the president of the Jalpaiguri district committee of the Congress, said the ruling party members had used sticks, iron rods and other weapons for the attack.
Oraon, a Congress member himself, who lived nearby, came out of the house and asked the rival party supporters to stop the attack. Incensed, the CPM members hit him with an iron rod and he fell on the ground. Four other workers of the Congress also suffered injuries in the attack.
By that time, police reached the spot and took Oraon, along with other injured persons, to Sulkapara Health Centre. While the four were discharged after primary treatment, Oraon was shifted to Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital. After his condition deteriorated yesterday afternoon, Oraon was taken to the medical college where he died last night.
In another incident, CPM workers attacked Congress members with arrows and bows in Chengmari Tea Estate this morning. An arrow pierced through Shibkumar Kujur’s eye and he was admitted to hospital. Sarkar alleged that the CPM workers had also damaged five houses and injured seven persons.
The CPM has denied its involvement in today’s attack.
