Yoga pill for young inmates

Ranchi, May 22: The Juvenile Justice Board has chosen yoga to treat juvenile inmates.

It has organised a 15-day yoga session beginning tomorrow. Swami Swarupananda, a member of Yoga Sadhna Kendra, Bargawa, who would teach them asanas and the breathing techniques, would also deliver lectures on moral teachings.

“Some of the children are lodged at the Boys’ Remand Home in Dumardaga. They were released before but were caught again. This proves that they have developed a criminal bent of mind, which is a serious issue,” said Sanjay Kumar Mishra, a member of Juvenile Justice Board.

The board has decided to hold yoga classes to treat inmates. At present, as many as 153 inmates are lodged at the remand home. Sources said the inmates include five children who were found to be “aides” of doctors arrested in a kidney theft operation. The doctors allegedly belonged to Latehar district and are now are in jail.

The home also has around 15 children who were booked under rape charges. A majority of the children, however, was caught in small crimes including theft. Some have also been booked for murders.

The judicial academy has also organised a training programme for judicial magistrates of the juvenile justice boards of various regions. Moreover, the children would be taught how to repair pump sets, motorcycles, television sets and mobiles.
