Imphal, May 21: Hosts Manipur started their campaign on a promising note winning their respective matches at the 18th Sub-Junior (Boys and Girls) National Baseball Championship at Mapal Kangjeibung here today.
In the boys’ section, Manipur defeated Madhya Pradesh 7-3. Manipur’s David Singh contributed two runs while Prem Singh, Rumar Singh, Girish Singh, Lojesh Singh and Angamba contributed one run each. Madhya Pradesh’s Vivek, Nishant and Ketan helped the team to grab three runs.
In the girls’ matches, Manipur thrashed West Bengal 10-0. For the winning team, A. Kabita Devi and Luxmi Devi scored two runs each while Diana Devi, Satyabati Devi, Sophiya Devi, Rebika Devi, Anandi Devi and Puja Devi contributed one run each.
The Orissa girls’ team also started on a winning note, defeating the formidable Delhi team by 14-8 runs. For Orissa, Jyoti was the highest scorer with three runs while Punam, Debasmita and Prabhati contributed two runs each while Rita, Padamaja, Anjali, Rebati and Mitanjali scored one run each. For Delhi, Chandra, Nutan and Nisha scored two runs each while Shubam and Priyanka contributed one run each for the team.
Goa wrested a 10-0 victory against Madhya Pradesh with Niyati scoring two runs and Neha, Sheral, Geetanjali, Anuksha, Riki, Manjiri, Jagruti and Solochana adding one run each to win the match today. Goa also registered their second win of the day defeating Jammu and Kashmir 10-0.
The Manipur girls also registered their second victory of the day defeating Himachal Pradesh 16-4, while Haryana girls defeated Tamil Nadu by a narrow margin of 5-4 runs.
Chattisgarh girls defeated Uttranchal by 7-6 runs while Delhi girls registered a 9-5 win against Bihar.
In the boys’ group, Jammu and Kashmir registered a narrow win of 20-19 runs against West Bengal. Amit contributed four runs while Rashad, Arif and Hashim scored three runs each.
Rufiad, Fahid and Muzafar also added two runs each with Safeer finally scoring the one run for Jammu and Kashmir win.
The West Bengal boys gave their best with Md Azad and Md Sammin contributing four runs each.
Gopal, Rajiv, Chiranjit, Aquib added two runs and Monojit, Md Sarif and Dhananjit scored one run each but finally missed the target by a whisker.
In the other matches, Delhi defeated Bihar 11-1 while Goa defeated Kerala 12-0. Haryana defeated Tamil Nadu 8-5 and Goa stunned Maharashtra 10-0 in their second match.
Bihar defeated Uttar Pradesh 6-4 and Madhya Pradesh defeated Himachal Pradesh 6-3. Delhi defeated Tamil Nadu by 8-6 runs, Goa defeated Uttranchal by 11-7 runs while Haryana defeated Gujarat 10-0. Kerala defeated Pondichery 7-3 and Manipur wrapped up the day with 11-1 win against Himachal Pradesh today.
