Fined for old pills sale

Jalpaiguri, May 20: The Jalpaiguri district consumer redressal forum has ordered a chemist shop in the Kadamtala area of the town to pay Rs 10,000 as compensation to a woman, Madhumita Saha, for selling medicine which had crossed the expiry date.

Based on her doctor’s prescription, she had purchased a strip of tablets from the shop on December 28, 2007. The tablets were valid only till December 2007. In its order, the forum pointed out that since the course was for 10 days, the shopkeeper should have given only four tablets from that strip and the remaining six from a fresh batch.


Sleaze arrests

Siliguri: Siliguri police on Tuesday arrested five persons from a residence in Hakimpara for running a sex racket in the house that was rented out to them. The arrested were three women and two men.


3 die in blast

Malda: Three persons were killed in a blast in Baisabnagar on Tuesday. Police said some criminals were making bombs at an abandoned house when one of the explosives went off. Those who were injured fled the spot. All the men were on the wanted list of the police.


Dharna

Darjeeling: Students of Darjeeling Government College staged a demonstration near the office of the acting principal on Tuesday alleging that there had been no electricity in the physics department for the past five days. The vice-president of the students’ union said the officer-in-charge, Lalita Ahmed Rai, had asked them to buy kerosene with their money and run a generator.


Man run over

Islampur: Shantanu Mohanto (40) of Shantinagar was run over by a train at Aluabari junction on Tuesday while he was trying to cross the track.
