Depressed girl hangs herself

A girl committed suicide by hanging herself at her Tollygunge Road home on Monday night. Pinky Sarkar, 16, was found hanging from the ceiling when neighbours broke open the door around 11.30pm. She was suffering from depression. Pinky committed suicide after sending her mother out to fetch dinner. The body has been sent for post-mortem. No suicide note was found.

Fire breaks out in office

A fire broke out on the first-floor office of a gunny bag-manufacturing factory on Dilwargunge Road, in the Watgunge area, on Tuesday morning. Four fire tenders took an hour and a half to bring the fire under control. No was injured. The extent of the damage is yet to be ascertained, said an officer.

Airport injury

An electrician on contract suffered burns on his hands and an electric shock while working at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport on Tuesday noon. Rana Kar, 32, a resident of Ganganagar, was treated by the airport doctors and later admitted to a private hospital in the Baguiati area. The hospital authorities said that his condition was stable.

Dowry death cry

Kesuan Bibi, 29, was allegedly killed by her husband at Mahestala on Monday night. Police said she was tortured by her husband and in-laws for dowry since her marriage. Kesuan was found frothing from the mouth on Tuesday morning and was taken to a local hospital, where she was declared dead. A search is on for her husband. The couple have a son.

Lightning strike

A middle-aged woman died after being struck by lightning at her Budge Budge residence, on the southern fringes of the city, on Monday night. Police said Amina Bibi, 45, was on the verandah when it was raining.

Jute mill picket

The picket posted at Loomtex Engineering Ltd, a unit of Titagarh Jute Mill, in Khardah, has been withdrawn from Tuesday after normality has been restored, a senior police officer said. The forces were posted on Thursday after the personnel officer of the company, Apurba Kumar Roy Chowdhury, was beaten to death. Officials of the mill expect production will resume soon.

Buses seized

A government bus of the West Bengal Surface Transport Corporation and another bus were impounded by the Lake Town traffic guard on Tuesday evening for rash driving. Police said both the buses were heading towards Ultadanga along VIP Road. The drivers of both the vehicles were fined by the police.
