Garments shop gutted

Malda, May 19: A garments shop was gutted and three other establishments were damaged partially in a fire at Netaji Market here tonight.

No one was injured in the blaze, which was doused by two fire-tenders. An electrical short circuit appears to have started the fire that broke out around 8.30pm. The total damage is yet to be assessed. Malda Merchant Chamber of Commerce secretary Jayanta Kundu said timely intervention of the fire brigade averted more damage.


Hearing ends

Darjeeling: The one-man commission probing the April 9 lathicharge on ex-servicemen in Siliguri concluded its hearing in Darjeeling on Monday. A Gorkha Janmukti Morcha representative had deposed before K.L. Meena in Siliguri on Sunday.


Free books

Siliguri: Books were distributed free to 110 financially weak children in Ward 18 of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation on Monday.


Cultural show

Siliguri: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation and the subdivisional information and cultural office will jointly organise a four-day Rabindra-Najrul cultural programme from May 25 at Rabindra Mancha. “Eminent artistes like Shantanu Roychoudhury and Pubali Mukharjee from Calcutta and students and teachers of Rabindra Bharati University will perform,” said deputy mayor Munshi Nurul Islam.
