Alipurduar, May 16: Four Congress supporters were attacked allegedly by CPM members who also damaged two rival candidates’ houses last night.
Kapiluddin Mia, a Congress supporter who was returning home along with Ziarul, was attacked by an armed gang of 25 CPM members at Shalkumarhat in Alipurduar at 10pm. “After beating up Ziarul, they struck me with an iron rod and hit on my head with a dagger from behind. Residents came to our rescue after listening to our cries,” Mia said from his hospital bed. “The CPM has been threatening to convert this place to another Nandigram.”
A Congress supporter at Chaporerpara-I gram panchayat, Uttam Dutta, was also beaten up allegedly by the CPM. Dutta was admitted to the Alipurduar hospital.
In Falakata, Mukul Barman, the Trinamul candidate from Paronger Par gram panchayat, alleged that CPM members had damaged his house. He has lodged an FIR.
The president of the Congress’s Jalpaiguri district committee, Biswaranjan Sarkar, said CPM members assaulted a party supporter at Changmari and ransacked a woman candidate’s house at Malbazar. The party had lodged police complaints. “The CPM is torturing innocent people like they did in Nandigram,” he added.
CPM’s Alipurduar-I zonal committee secretary Jyotish Roy has denied the charge. “This is nothing new. When the Opposition parties realise that they are loosing, they level allegations,” he said.
