Shop gutted
Two incidents of fire were reported in the city on Friday. A shop
was gutted near Goswami Service in the wee hours while a fire broke out at a Food Corporation of India depot in New Guwahati at 11.45am. It was brought under control at 1pm.
Accident
One person died and two were seriously injured while cutting a hill at Dakhingaon under Dispur police station on Friday. Nazrul Ali died while Hyder Ali and Malek Ali were injured.
Jumbo calf
Forest officials recovered the body of a three-month-old elephant calf from Deepor Beel on Friday.
Awards
The Guwahati Artist Guild has awarded lifetime membership to six persons who have made significant contributions to literature and arts. They are Nilamoni Phukan, Birendra Nath Dutta, Hiren Bhattacharyya, Atulananda Goswami, Hare Krishna Deka and Dhirendra Nath Saikia.
Training
A special training in screen printing was organised by the Vocational Rehabilitation Centre for Handicapped for mentally challenged persons at Ashadeep in Gandhibasti on Friday. The vice-chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, B.B. Bhattacharyya, delivered a lecture on the role of youths in the development of India in the 21st century at Pragjyoti ITA culture centre on Friday. The lecture was organised by K.C. Das Commerce College.
Donation
East Guwahati MLA Capt. Robin Bordoloi has donated Rs 1 lakh from his MLA local area development fund for the construction of a permanent office of Hatigaon Mahila Samiti.
Theft
Two motorcycles were stolen from the premises of a gymnasium in Dispur on Friday.
Water woes
East Guwahati residents continued to suffer from water scarcity on Friday as the GMC failed to repair the two pipe-lines that had burst last week.
