Govt funds MIT boy

Calcutta, May 16: The Bengal government has promised to fund the transit expenses of a 17-year-old village boy who had earned a full scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

A higher secondary examinee from Bankura Zilla School, Anshuman Panda has never had a TV at home: his father Bidhan Chandra Panda earns Rs 3,500 a month.

“The chief minister has personally taken interest, and we have decided to do everything necessary to facilitate the boy’s entry into the coveted institution,” finance minister Asim Dasgupta said.

Dasgupta, an MIT alumnus himself, said the state would pay Rs 2.25 lakh for expenses.
