Threat SMS, gangster cuffed

Bhubaneswar, May 16: Following complaints from actress Leslie Tripathy yesterday about receiving threat calls, the state prison department today decided to keep gangster Raja Acharya handcuffed and in a secluded cell in Jharpada special jail.

Leslie had been receiving threat calls and SMS texts on her cellphone and had brought them to the notice of the police yesterday.

“This is of course a very serious issue. As he is in judicial custody, we will inform the court first. This is also the contempt of court. We are definitely inquiring into the allegations made,” said inspector-general(prisons) Thyagrajan, adding that Raja would be handcuffed and kept in a separate cell.

“We have also instructed jail authorities to remain alert on this and step up security inside the jail. Strict instructions on not to allow cellphones on the premises has also been passed in all jails across the state,” he said.

Leslie told reporters that it was getting “scarier” as days passed.

“What could be worse than a criminal having access to a cellphone from inside the jail. The feeling of being insecure is only increasing. We feel like we have guns on our heads. What will happen if he gets out? We can only hope that the Orissa police do its best to protect our lives,” said Leslie.

Through SMS texts, the gangster has apparently offered to quit his life of crime if Leslie agrees to marry him.

“I had hoped that the matter would come to an end, once he was put behind bars. But I’m shocked that such a thing continues even from the jail,” said Leslie.

Leslie and Bidusmita have also demanded a CBI probe into the nude MMS controversy.
