Students drown in river
Islampur, May 15: Bicky Routh (16) and Suman Shekhar (18), students of Sonapur High School and Islampur High School respectively, drowned in the Mahananda at Sonapur near Chopra last night.
Police said the two boys had gone to Sonapur for the funeral of a neighbour. When they went to the river for a bath after the funeral, they were washed away by the strong current. The police later recovered the bodies and sent them for post-mortem.
Rescued
Siliguri: Dulal Pal, a resident of Prakashnagar near Matigara, was rescued by the personnel of the Siliguri fire station after he was buried under mud on Thursday. He was digging a well when the incident happened. The fire-fighters rushed him to the Siliguri district hospital where he is recuperating.
Rape arrest
Islampur: Md Fulu, a resident of Kalikapur near Chopra, was arrested on Thursday for allegedly raping his daughter-in-law on Tuesday. Police said Fulu’s arrest followed a complaint by the woman.
Lawyers’ plea
Siliguri: Members of the Siliguri Bar Association have submitted a memorandum to Bengal law minister Rabilal Moitra, asking for a four-storied building within the complex where the courts are currently functioning here. A delegation, led by Ratan Banik, the secretary of the association, met Moitra in Calcutta on Thursday.
Suicides
Islampur: Suraj Tirkhi (42), a resident of North Dinajpur’s Chandangach, hanged himself on Wednesday night. In Lalitgach of the same district, Gangarani Barman (45) committed suicide by hanging herself on Wednesday night.
