Jamshedpur, May 15: To prevent a repetition of Wednesday’s incident at the observation home in Karandih, the East Singhbhum administration today rushed to appoint an additional cook on deputation.
Two helpers have also been appointed on daily wage basis.
The lone cook, Baikunth Singh, had gone on leave yesterday triggering a ruckus by inmates on the campus. Singh has been recalled.
Vijay Kumar, the district welfare officer, said the situation at the observation home was under control and the agitated inmates have calmed down. “They created problems over the delay in serving food yesterday. But things have returned to normal,” he added.
The district welfare department looks after the affairs of the observation home.
Kumar visited the observation home this morning and stayed there for two hours. He spoke to some of the inmates and tried to understand their problems.
The district welfare officer said the boys became agitated after someone instigated them. “It was a minor issue,” he said. Kumar confirmed that they have appointed an additional cook on deputation to assist the regular one, who has been working for some years now. Two helpers have also been hired, he said.
He said he has apprised the deputy commissioner of the situation. Kumar replied in the negative on if the observation home was facing any funds crunch.
