Tripping claims constable’s life
CRPF head constable Nandan Kumar Singh was found hanging from the third-floor terrace of his Salt Lake office, head down and a rope wrapped around his legs, early on Thursday . The 28-year-old Patna resident was taken to Bidhannagar Sub-divisional Hospital where he was declared dead.
Singh was last seen around 1am talking on his cellphone on the office premises. An officer of Bidhannagar (South) police station said Singh tripped after his legs got entangled in the rope. “His head hit the end of the terrace. The injury might have caused the death. There was no sign of any foul play,” the officer added.
Warehouse blaze
A fire broke out in a detergent warehouse on Khagen Chatterjee Road, in Cossipore, around 8.15am on Thursday. Three tenders brought the blaze under control around 9.40am. The fire was caused by an electrical short circuit, said a police officer. No casualties were reported.
Library smoke
Thick smoke emanated from an air-conditioning plant at National Library, Alipore, around 7.05am on Thursday. Two fire tenders arrived on the spot after being informed by the authorities. Officers later clarified there was no fire.
Blockade
Posta residents set up a roadblock at the intersection of Kalakar Street and Hariram Goenka Street at 9.40am on Thursday to protest prolonged power cuts over the past few weeks. The blockade was lifted after a team from CESC started repairs around 10am.
Body found
The body of a man aged about 40 years was found floating in the Hooghly, near Jagannath Ghat, on Thursday morning. A member of the team that spotted the body said it had no injury marks. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
Demonstration
Sixteen Trinamul Chhatra Parishad supporters were arrested while they were demonstrating in front of Writers’ Buildings around 2.20pm on Thursday. The youths, led by Akhilesh Singh and Sanjoy Sonkar, were protesting the violence in the ongoing panchayat polls. They were released later.
Murdered
The body of an unidentified man was found in Gangadharpur, in Howrah’s Panchla, on Thursday. It bore several injury marks, suggesting he had been murdered.
