6 Maoists killed, 4 cops hurt

Patna, May 14: Six Naxalites were killed and four policemen were injured in an encounter in Nawada on the Bihar-Jharkhand border, 200km from here today.

Nawada superintendent of police Vinod Kumar rushed to the spot where the encounter was on till last reports came in.

Officers in the superintendent of police’s office said that hundreds of armed rebels in olive green outfits had gathered at Mahari village under Sridala police station for a meeting to plan an operation in the area.

The police received a tip-off about the meeting and rushed to the village inviting heavy gunfire from the Naxalites’ side from 7.30pm. Soon, sources added, a gun battle ensued between the rebels and the personnel in which hundreds of rounds have so far been exchanged.

The police recovered three assault rifles, one carbine, hundreds of live cartridges and eight can bombs from the spot so far.

“Four jawans of the security force were injured and six rebels were killed,” said a senior police officer at the police headquarters here, adding: “We are not in a position to furnish further details as yet for Kumar and all other senior officers are in the thick of things there still.”

Sources at the police headquarters also said the borders of Bihar-Jharkhand, near Nawada, have been sealed.
