Train kills two on bridge

Alipurduar, May 13: Two women died after being hit by an express train on the railway bridge over the Torsha in Jaigaon this afternoon when they were walking along the tracks.

More than 30 people, who had been working on the embankment of the Torsha today, were following the tracks on their way home. Around 5.45pm, when they were on the bridge, they saw the Alipurduar-bound Ranchi Express coming at them at high speed.

While most of the workers squeezed into the space along the tracks, Jaheda Ansari and Chameli Biswakarma tried to quickly cross the bridge. The train hit them and they died on the spot.

“We shouted at them to get off the tracks, but they did not listen to us. They died in front of our eyes,” said Jaheda’s husband Rajamat Ansari.

The train later stopped at Hasimara station where the driver submitted a report.
