Failure prompts youth to hang self

Jamshedpur, May 13: A 24-year-old student of Jamshedpur Co-operative College, Amit Karan, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan of his rented room at Aambagan under Sakchi police station last night.

The deceased was a resident of Lachhipur in West Midnapore district of Bengal.

A suicide note recovered from his room suggested that the young man was “frustrated” because he was unsuccessful in clearing his examinations. He wrote that he had failed his BSc examinations thrice in the past three years and hence did not “wish to live any more”.

Police took custody of the body and sent it to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem having registered a case of unnatural death based on the statement of Niranjan Bhattacharya, the owner of the house. According to Bhattacharya, Amit had been his tenant for the past two years.

On Monday noon, Bhattacharya came to Amit’s room and asked him to help him out in the evening as he was expecting guests. Amit had promised to help.

In the evening, Bhattacharya found the door to Amit’s room closed. After repeatedly knocking on the door and receiving no response, the owner went to the backyard to check. Through the open window he saw the young man hanging from the ceiling.

Bhattacharya and other residents broke open the door to find Amit dead.

The deceased had used a shoelace to hang himself from the ceiling fan. “It was a nylon lace which was taken out of Amit’s sports shoe,” said a relative of the deceased.

Amit’s relatives reached the hospital today after receiving the news.

The bereaved family members said Amit was also attending a computer course apart from pursuing his BSc. They added that the deceased was not a dull student and hinted that the young man may have been forced to take the step due to “other” reasons.

Jagdish Prasad, the officer in charge of Sakchi police station, said although the case appeared to be a suicide, the police would investigate the matter further.
