Canara Bank to educate 13 girls

Ranchi, May 13: Canara Bank launched its Girl Child Adoption Scheme, thereby taking the responsibility to educate 13 girls.

U.C. Sarangi, the chairman of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard) inaugurated the event. Thirteen girls belong to below poverty line (BPL) families and are from the SC/ST category.

The bank plans to adopt 13 girls every year and take responsibility of educating them up to the Intermediate level. The girls were presented with documents and demand drafts.

R.R. Sharma, the bank’s deputy general manager, Jharkhand region, said Canara Bank is aware of its corporate social responsibility. “Keeping in mind the backwardness and low literacy rate of women in Jharkhand, we felt the need for doing something for the empowerment of women here,” said Sharma.

He added that managers would be in constant touch with the girls to keep track on their performance.

Earlier, the bank had adopted the villages of Cheri and Manatu for overall infrastructure development.
