JU defers entry test for polls
The admission test for the English MA course of Jadavpur University, scheduled for Wednesday, will be held on Saturday. Officials attributed the postponement to the panchayat polls.
Water meters
The Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) is procuring 15,000 water meters that are to be installed in residential buildings. “The CMC is now collecting water charges at a fixed rate from domestic consumers using 20-mm and 25-mm ferrules,” said civic commissioner Alapan Bandyopadhyay. After the meters are installed, the CMC will charge Rs 3 for every kilolitre of water consumed.
Passenger ill
A passenger fell ill on board a Dubai-Calcutta Emirates flight on Tuesday. Pradip Bhattacharya, who was coming to the city from Bahrain, was rushed to the airport’s medical cell after the flight landed around 8.15am. The passenger was diagnosed with hypertension and was admitted to a nursing home.
Fake tickets
Three persons were arrested on Tuesday for trying to enter Eden Gardens to watch the IPL match with fake tickets.
Rape cry
A 35-year-old man has been accused of raping a 15-year-old girl. Police said the man, a resident of Jadavpur’s AK Chatterjee Road, is absconding. A search for the accused is on following a complaint lodged by the girl’s mother.
Road death
Mohammad Wakil, 31, died after being knocked down by a private bus on route 227 on Karl Marx Sarani, in Watgunge, on Monday night. He was taken to SSKM Hospital, where he died. The bus was impounded but the driver fled.
Suicide probe
Officers of the detective department who are probing the death of Mofizul Haque will interrogate Pranab Kumar Dey Roy, a sub-inspector of Watgunge police station. The officer has been suspended for violating rules during Haque’s interrogation. Haque committed suicide after he was dragged to the police station and humiliated for not returning the money he had allegedly borrowed from a colleague. |
