CU to discuss exam plea

The appeal by 97 students of Calcutta University (CU)’s English department that they be allowed to appear in the MA (English) Part II examinations will be placed in the university syndicate body meeting for its consideration on May 16. The 97 students were barred from taking the examinations, slated in July, because they did not have the mandatory 55 per cent attendance. The English department is examining whether extra classes can be held for these 97 students. The report of the department will be also placed before the syndicate.

Blaze in CM para office

A fire broke out around 4.45pm in an office on Palm Avenue. Three fire tenders rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control within an hour. Fire department officials said a short circuit in an air-conditioner caused the fire. No loss of life was reported.

Slab collapse

Two pedestrians were injured when a cement slab collapsed from a four-storeyed building opposite Telephone Bhavan at BBD Bag on Monday evening. Of the injured, Asutosh Pal, 65, is a resident of Agarpara and Soumen Halder, 25, lives in New Alipore. Both are admitted at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. Pal has a left shoulder injury while Halder has a badly injured left leg.

Man found dead

A 60-year-old man was found dead in his Radhanath Choudhury Lane flat on Monday evening. Around 7pm, Entally police and neighbours broke open the door to find the decomposed body of Rajnath Mishra. His wife had gone to a relative’s place in Delhi on Friday. Neighbours said Mishra was a drunkard.

Infant in bush

The body of a newborn boy with both legs amputated was found under a bush on the eastern side of Eden Gardens Circular Railway station around 9am on Monday. Officials of North Port police station took the boy to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. An investigation has been started to identify the parents, and the post-mortem report is awaited to ascertain the cause and time of death.

Road mishap

Tapan Chaudhury, 33, died on the spot and Shyamal Roy, 40, and Babulal, 22, were seriously injured after a Tata Sumo hit the motorcycle they were travelling on near Sundarpur, on Kona Expressway, around 3.30pm on Monday. The driver of the car lost control over his vehicle and landed it in a nearby ditch. He, however, managed to flee immediately after the accident.
