CPM leader found strangled

Nitai Ghosh, 55, a CPM leader, was found dead in a club room at Barrackpore on Sunday morning. Police said Ghosh, a member of the CPM’s local committee, had left home to attend a party meeting. A preliminary inquiry revealed that Ghosh had been strangled.

Drug peddler held in chase

Officers of Beniapukur police station netted a drug peddler, identified as Yogesh Punjabi, alias Yogi, 29, and seized six grams of brown sugar from him, police said on Sunday. After receiving a tip-off early on Saturday that Yogesh had been spotted in the Park Circus Maidan-Sundari Mohan Avenue area, a team from the anti-narcotics cell started combing the locality. Yogesh was seen with a few men, who fled on seeing the cops. Yogesh was netted after a chase.

Man run over

Uday Mondal, 60, was knocked down by a Tata Sumo on Maniktala Main Road, near the Kankurgachhi crossing, early on Sunday. Mondal was trying to cross the road when the vehicle, coming towards the intersection, hit him. Mondal was taken to NRS Medical College and Hospital, where he died. The vehicle was impounded but the driver fled.

Flier arrested

A passenger was arrested at Calcutta airport late on Saturday. Jaswinder Singh, 42, a resident of Punjab, was on his way from Calcutta to Bangkok via Dhaka. He was detained by the immigration authorities, as there was a theft case pending against him in Haryana. He was later handed over to airport police.

Civic laptops

The Calcutta Municipal Corporation has decided to provide all its mayoral council members with laptops. According to mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya on Sunday, the move is part of the e-governance project of the civic body.

Data panel chief

The chief minister will meet cabinet colleague Nirupam Sen and Opposition leader in the Assembly Pankaj Banerjee on Monday to discuss who should be appointed chairperson of the state information commission.
