Manipur drivers protest

Imphal, May 9: Auto-rickshaw services were suspended in most parts of Manipur today after the drivers staged protests in different parts of the state over militant demands.

The drivers staged the sit-ins in Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur and Thoubal districts. The family members of the auto drivers also participated in the daylong protest. Nearly 3,000 autos suspended services for the day.

The drivers said three militant groups had asked them to pay annual tax ranging from Rs 300 to Rs 500. “We appeal to the groups to withdraw the demands,” said All Manipur Auto-Rickshaw Owners and Drivers Association secretary K. Bideshor Sharma.

The auto drivers and owners also demanded a proper parking place for them in Imphal city.
