Youth held for extortion bid

Raju Das, 24, was arrested on Thursday night on charges of blackmailing his former employer to shell out Rs 5 lakh. Das, a resident of Howrah’s Belgachhia, left his job in a fabrication factory on Benaras Road a month ago. Since then, he had been threatening to kill factory owner Mihir Maji’s daughters if he did not cough up the money.

Injured in mishap

Sumana Ghosh, 25, was injured when the motorcycle she was riding pillion on skidded off Casuarina Avenue, near Fort William, around 10am on Friday. Ghosh, a Chandernagore resident, was admitted to SSKM Hospital. Husband S. Ghosh had a close shave.

Train services

Train services in the Sealdah South section will be disrupted from 10.15pm on Saturday to 6.15am on Sunday because of repairs on the Bagha Jatin flyover, an official said on Friday. Eight local trains will be cancelled on Saturday night. Two trains on the Budge Budge route will terminate at and originate from Ballygunge, while another eight trains will terminate at and originate from Sonarpur on Saturday night. On Sunday morning, eight trains on the Budge Budge route, seven on the Canning route, 10 on the Lakshmikantapur-Namkhana route, six on the Diamond Harbour route and 16 on the Sonarpur-Baruipur route will be cancelled.

Body found

The body of Kamal Das, 30, was found floating in the Hooghly, near Ahiritola Ghat, around 11.30am on Friday. Police said Das lived on AK Mukherjee Road, in Baranagar. The body has been sent for post-mortem.

CPM leader killed

Soukat Ali, 57, a member of the CPM’s Barrackpore local committee, was killed by an unidentified gang on Friday morning. Police said Ali left his house around 5am on Friday. A deep cut mark was found at the back of Ali’s head.

Electrocuted

Jumman Ali Mondal, 19, was electrocuted in Rabindra Nagar, on the southern fringes of the city, while he was flying a kite late on Thursday. He was taken to hospital where he died.
