Police remove maps

Cooch Behar, May 7: The district administration has started removing the hoardings featuring maps of “the state of Greater Cooch Behar” that had recently started appearing here. Cooch Behar police chief Anil Kumar said the hoardings, set up by the Greater Cooch Behar People’s Association, were illegal and police were removing all of them.

The Association, which is demanding a new state, today started distributing leaflets urging people not to participate in the panchayat elections.


Poll clash

Islampur: Eight persons were injured when supporters of the RSP and the CPM clashed during a panchayat poll campaign at Nanda Jhar near Goalpokhar on Tuesday night. No one has been arrested yet.


Class boycott

Cooch Behar: The teachers of Uttar Banga Krishi Visvavidyalalya have started boycotting classes from Wednesday, demanding the removal of Shankar Kumar Laha as the “temporary” vice-chancellor of the agricultural university.


Fair begins

Siliguri: Baisakhi Mela, the annual summer fair of traditional handicrafts and games, began at the Kanchenjunga Mela Grounds on Wednesday. Siliguri mayor Bikash Ghosh inaugurated the fair.


Rally for wage

Islampur: Members of the Islampur Pourosabha Karmachari Joutho Sangram Committee on Wednesday took out a rally here to protest against the delay in the payment of civic wages for April.
